2016年412日,霍金发布了他的第一条微博,向中国的朋友问好。其实,当时除了知道他在研究宇宙、黑洞,是世界著名的物理学家、宇宙学家,写了《时间简史》,其他的一无所知。大一的时候买了一本《时间简史》,但是以当时的理解力以及阅历很难明白其中的奥义。直到看了《万物理论》,通过电影了解了霍金的传记,才终于觉得,与这样伟大的科学家同时代真是一件荣幸的事情。时至今日,我们看看这位伟大的宇宙学家在微博里都说了什么:

Greetings to my friends in China! It has been too long! I last visited China in 2006 when I took part in a physics conference in Beijing. It was an extraordinary experience. My first trip was in 1985 when I travelled across your remarkable country by train. In my physical travels, I have only been able to touch the surface of your fascinating history and culture. But now I can communicate with you through social media – and I hope to tell you more about my life and work through this page and also to learn from you in reply.

 

我的中国朋友们,你们好吗?好久不见了!我上次拜访中国是在2006年,当时在北京参加了一场物理会议,那次经历非常难忘。我的首次中国之旅是在1985 年,我那时候坐火车游历了你们雄伟的国度。这些旅行使我对博大精深的中国历史和文化略有了接触。不过现在,我可以通过社交媒体和你们交流了 —— 通过这个微博,我希望和你们分享我的生活趣事和工作心得,也希望能在互动中向你们学习。

Greetings to everybody in China from NYC. At the One World Observatory in New York City, Yuri Milner and I launched a mission to the stars. Mark Zuckerberg lent his support by joining the board of our new initiative, Breakthrough Starshot.

 

Within the next generation, Breakthrough Starshot aims to develop a ‘nanocraft’ – a gram-scale robotic space probe and use a light beam to push it to 20 percent of the speed of light. If we are successful, a flyby mission could reach Alpha Centauri about 20 years after launch, and send back images of any planets discovered in the system.

 

Albert Einstein once imagined riding on a light beam, and his thought experiment led him to the theory of special relativity. A little over a century later, we have the chance to attain a significant fraction of that speed: 100 million miles an hour. Only by going that fast can we reach the stars on the time-scale of a human life.

 

It is exciting to be involved in such an ambitious project, pushing the boundaries of ingenuity and engineering.

 

我在纽约向中国的各位问好!在纽约城的一号楼观景台,我和尤里·米尔纳启动了“突破摄星”计划 (Breakthrough Starshot),马克·扎克伯格也加入了该计划的董事会,为“突破摄星”助一臂之力。

Thank you so much for your generous response to my new Weibo page! I was overwhelmed and delighted by your enthusiasm and grateful for the respect you showed me.

 

I had an extraordinary week. I visited New York where I met Placido Domingo at the Metropolitan Opera. I am a life long opera fan and it was a great privilege for me to meet one of my musical heroes.

 

I was in New York for a serious purpose. With my collaborators Yuri Milner and Mark Zuckerberg, I launched a project to redesign long distance space travel. We propose sending a fleet of light beam powered nanocrafts to our nearest star, Alpha Centauri. This would be a revolution in space travel – the tiny spacecraft would be able to travel fast enough to relay information to us within a life time. We could learn so much about our galaxy – and ultimately ourselves. It is a huge project but we all agree it is time to boldly go. I look forward to telling you more!

"There is a story about an ancient Chinese philosopher, Zhuangzi. Zhuangzi dreamt of becoming a butterfly. And he wondered if he was a man who dreamt of being a butterfly or a butterfly that dreamt of being a man. Prof. Hawking, how do we know if we are living in our dreams or reality?”

 

Thank you for your question! Zhuangzi dreamt of being a butterfly - perhaps because he was a man who loved freedom. I might dream of the universe and then wonder if the universe dreamt of me. To answer your question how do we know if we are living in our dreams or reality - well, we just don't and perhaps can't! At least not until we start to understand more about consciousness and the universe. We must keep striving for an understanding of the fundamental questions of existence. And then perhaps we will know whether the butterfly - and the universe - are real or just in our dreams.  -SH

I have really enjoyed my time in Cambridge, USA! I live in Cambridge, England, but it is always a pleasure to visit my American counterpart. While I was at the other Cambridge, I opened the Black Hole Initiative at Harvard University. In 1990,  I received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University - at the same time as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time, Ella Fitzgerald. On this trip, I gave a public lecture on my favourite topic, Black Holes. I then met with physics colleagues at the inaugural scientific conference in order to work on my next scientific papers. To cap it all, at a Persian dinner, I was presented with this black hole cake. It looks too beautiful to cut into slices. And it allows us to journey into the centre of a black hole, even if it is one made of sponge and icing! Thank you to all my American friends for a wonderful US tour. I am safely home now - in Cambridge England -  with many happy memories.

Friday 13th is unlucky for some – but not for me! On that day, I had a space conference with the British astronaut Tim Peake who spoke to me from the International Space Station. We had a fascinating conversation about dark matter, unfriendly aliens and the impact of climate change. Tim took me and my companions on a tour of the ISS and showed us the astonishing views of the Earth from space. The ISS flew over South America while we were talking. Tim was a wonderful guide and a brilliant man. It was a joy to have this privilege – an afternoon I will never forget. Thank you Tim and get home safely.

"It is said that fact is sometimes stranger than fiction, and nowhere is that more true than in the case of black holes. Black holes are stranger than anything dreamed up by science fiction writers."

 

In 2016 I delivered the BBC Reith Lectures on black holes, which have fascinated me for years. In the Reith Lectures, I argue that if we could only understand black holes and how they challenge the very nature of space and time, we could unlock the secrets of the universe.

 

They are now available in paperback form, introduced and annotated by BBC Science Editor David Shukman, with illustrations like the one below throughout.

 

“有人说,现实有的时候比小说更离奇,用这句话来形容黑洞是再贴切不过了。真正的黑洞比任何科幻小说家想象的都更怪异。”
